Main purpose of job:
The Defence Engagement Officer is a key member of the British Embassy Seoul’s Defence Section, working closely with the Defence Attaché and Deputy Defence Attaché to deliver the UK’s Defence Engagement programme in South Korea. This role supports the UK Ministry of Defence’s strategic objectives by coordinating high-level bilateral defence activities, including senior military visits, joint exercises, training programmes, and policy dialogues. The jobholder will liaise regularly with the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of National Defence, military services, international organisations, and academic institutions, while also collaborating across Embassy teams—particularly with the Defence & Security Exports—to support wider UK Government objectives. The role includes responsibility for managing the Defence Engagement budget and associated systems, contributing to policy development through regional analysis, and supporting the Embassy’s corporate and crisis response efforts. Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
Working to the Defence Attaché and the Deputy Defence Attaché, responsible for delivery of the UK’s Defence Engagement programme. This includes:
- Leading the planning and delivery of visits to ROK by senior UK military officers and MOD officials.
- Drafting briefing for high-level UK-ROK bilateral Defence engagements.
- Coordinating inward visits for UK personnel visiting for a range of UK Defence activities, including Exercises, Ship or Aircraft visits, training activities, conferences, Staff Talks and policy dialogues.
- Contributing to UK MOD policy making by enhancing understanding of the Korean Peninsula and regional security.
- Management of the UK’s Defence Engagement budget and associated software managment system.
- Working closely with other Embassy teams, in particular the Defence & Security Exports, to contribute to delivery of wider HMG Objectives.
- Establishing priorities and managing workflow through the wider team.
- Regular interaction with the ROK Ministry of National Defence, Single Services, Defence organisations, the UNC, think-tanks and academics.
Playing a full role in the life of the Embassy by leading corporate initiatives and contributing to our crisis response preparations.
