Main purpose of job:

To secure shipbuilding and marine engineering orders for UK plc against agreed targets in support of the wider National Shipbuilding Strategy agenda.

Roles and responsibilities:

Business Development (40%)

  • Identify, prioritise and develop relevant shipbuilding, marine engineering and investment opportunities.
  • Deliver on these opportunities for UK business, measuring success against agreed metrics, with accountability both in region and back to London for delivery.
  • Analyse the market, identify opportunities, prospective strategic customers and partners.
  • To source, plan and conduct face to face calls with prospective customers including ship owners and system integrators.
  • To present UK supply chain and relevant UK businesses to Korean nine shipyards and industry bodies.

Strategy Development (20%)

  • Work with current DBT regional and in-market resource focused on maritime and other relevant sectors to identify synergies and opportunities for UK business, providing oversight to relevant areas as needed.
  • Work with industry, OGDs and stakeholders to develop the UK offer in relation to specific markets and / or opportunities and actively promoting this offer by partnering with DBT Sector HQ, the Country Director and the in-country team. 
  • Work closely with DIT Seoul Post and HQ team to develop a value proposition and proposals that deliver optimal outcomes, negotiate and support to secure high value contracts for UK businesses.

Stakeholder/Account Management (15%)

  • Actively account manage key in-market customers, decision makers and influencers, ensuring all stakeholders are kept informed.
  • Work with UK builders and marine equipment companies to design relevant market entry mechanisms and support engagement with opportunities in conjunction colleagues and supporting engagement with specific identified opportunities.

Knowledge sharing (15%)

  • Maintain & develop (minimum bi-weekly) the Customer Relationship Management Database and build pipeline strategy.
  • Upskilling of DIT in-market teams to support the campaign effort and work with them and HQ to develop strategy.
  • Strong existing sector relationships and networks in-market.
  • Proven ability to develop strong relationships with senior decision makers and key customer organisations.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for UK Vessel Builders and marine engineering companies.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of shipping and the maritime sector.
  • Credible commercial strategic thinker.

         Language Requirement: Highly proficient in both written and spoken English and Korean

  • Working at a senior strategic customer-facing business development role within the maritime or related sector.
  • Demonstratable experience of working in the specific market and an understanding of market dynamics.
  • An excellent network of industry contacts.

The position is being advertised on a 12-month fixed term until 31 March 2024 with possibility of extension and is based in Ulsan. 

Learning & Development Opportunities:

The majority of our formal L&D opportunities are drawn from FCDO resources. All staff are encouraged to share their skills and experience with colleagues, through informal training (‘lunch & learn’) or coaching/mentoring.

Working Patterns:

Normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:15 (17:00 on Fridays). While some evening work and travel overseas (which might include weekends) and within Korea is required, we promote family-friendly flexible working opportunities, where operational and security needs allow.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. All candidates must be legally able to work and reside in the country of the vacancy with the correct visa/work permit status or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the relevant permit.
