Long Description

(Duration of contract: 1 year, with possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and satisfactory performance)



Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Culture (ADG/CLT), the general supervision of the Director of World Heritage and the direct supervision of the Head of the Latin America and the Caribbean Unit (CLT/WHC/LAC), and in close cooperation with the Coordinator of the Programme on Culture and Digital Technologies and the Programme Specialist of WHC/LAC, the incumbent shall exercise the function of Associate Project Officer for the Culture Sector in contribution to the development, research, coordination, implementation, and reporting for the ‘Strengthening capacities for resilient communities though the Sustainable Tourism and Heritage Safeguarding’ project. The project is a joint initiative of the World Heritage Centre and Living Heritage Entity, and the incumbent shall contribute to the outputs relating to World Heritage and sustainable tourism. The project will be implemented within the Framework of the Funds-in-Trust agreement between the Ministry of Culture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and UNESCO.

Long Description

In particular, the incumbent will:

  • Provide technical input into the conceptualization and design of project activities, undertaking research, compiling examples of best practice, and identifying experts and relevant partner institutions;
  • Contribute to the preparation of detailed activity programming and work plans for each of the different components of the project related to World Heritage and sustainable tourism;
  • Provide substantive and organisational support to ensure timely delivery of high quality outputs;
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings and workshops;
  • Maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, partners and the donor, developing mechanisms for frequent communication with focal points in the participating UNESCO Field Offices, World Heritage sites and countries;
  • Contribute to the communication strategy to enhance the visibility of the project, including presenting the project in meetings, exhibitions, events etc. and developing press releases, news stories, social media etc;
  • Contribute to the timely monitoring and reporting for the project both within UNESCO and with the external donor.

  • Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) required in tourism, culture or in a related field.


Work Experience

  • A minimum of two (2) years working experience in the field of tourism or culture, of which preferably at least one (1) year acquired at the international level.
  • Experience in drafting project documents, workplans, reports etc.

  • Ability to collect, synthesise and analyse information from various sources.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with proven ability to edit and draft clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent coordination and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload and meet tight deadlines, paying attention to detail and quality of work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a multi-cultural environment and to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Good IT skills, including knowledge of MS software (Word, Excel etc.).



  • Excellent knowledge of English (both written and spoken) and a good knowledge of French is an asset.



Work Experience

  • Experience in the field of sustainable tourism.
  • Relevant professional experience in the United Nations System or other international development organization(s).



  • Good knowledge of Spanish (both written and spoken).
  • Knowledge of another/other official UNESCO language(s) (Arabic, Chinese, French or Russian).


UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc.

The approximate annual starting salary for this post is 77 127 US $.
