Chef/Official Residence Manager

Intent

The Embassy of Canada in Seoul is looking to welcome a dedicated and energetic individual to work as a Chef/Official Residence Manager. Under the general supervision of the Ambassador, the incumbent is responsible for preparing and overseeing all culinary aspects of Canada’s representation. This includes identifying appropriate Canadian and local cuisine and preparing such cuisine for official hospitality events (including formal and informal luncheons, dinners, and receptions).

Area of Selection

  • This external competition is open to all applicants eligible to legally work in Korea who meet all of the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date, including embassy employees and spouses of Canada-based staff;

Summary of Duties

Under the supervision of the Ambassador:

  • Plan menus and prepare meals for official receptions;
  • Oversee and manage the daily work of the staff (temporary or permanent) at the Official Residence;
  • Manage the food inventory and supplies; and
  • Perform other related duties.

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must clearly demonstrate on their application that they meet all of the essential qualifications.

Language:

  • Fluency in English or French, both written and oral;
  • Fluency in Korean, both written and oral.

Education:

  • Formal education/training in Culinary or related field.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant and recent (within last 5 years of experience) as a chef.

Rated Qualifications

Candidates will be evaluated on, and must demonstrate through the selection process that they meet, the following competencies:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of food preparation and hygiene;
  • Knowledge of catering management;
  • Knowledge of various international menu planning.

Abilities:

  • Ability to plan, prioritize and organize workflow;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene;
  • Ability to prepare appropriate menus for guests with special dietary restrictions;
  • Ability to multitask.

Competencies:

  • Teamwork and cooperation;
  • Client focus;
  • Judgement;
  • Initiative.

Asset Qualifications

Language:

  • Fluency in both English and French, both written and oral.

Experience:

  • Extensive experience as an executive/diplomatic-level chef in a restaurant or hotel;
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in supervising a team of one or more employees;
  • Working in Canadian culture;
  • Experience of managing formal events of up to 50 guests and receptions of up to 100 guests.

Operational Requirements

  • Ability to work overtime.
  • Annual leave may be restricted due to operational needs.
  • As a member of the Canadian diplomatic presence abroad, requirement to adhere to Canada's Code on Values & Ethics.
  • Hours of Work: 8 hours per day, 5 days a week.     
  • Ability to undergo training. 

Conditions of Employment

  • The hiring or appointment of the successful candidate will be subject to obtaining Reliability Status (RS) through the Security section of the Embassy.  Please note that RS must be maintained throughout your employment at the Embassy, as failure to do so may result in dismissal.
  • Ability to maintain a valid working authorization in Korea for the duration of the employment term is a condition of employment at the Embassy of Canada. If applicable, proof of Visa is required

  • An English and/or Korean language test may be required to assess fluency.
