Network Infrastructure Engineer 

 
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is seeking a Network Infrastructure Engineer to join our Core Infrastructure Engineering team. 

This role is based in Basel, Switzerland however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities and located anywhere in the world. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and their dependent family members. 

Please note that this role is offered as a 3-year fixed-term contract. 

The Bank for International Settlements’ mission is to support central banks in their pursuit of monetary and financial stability, fostering international collaboration and acting as a bank for central banks. 

In this role, you will play a pivotal part in advancing this mission by combining strategic architectural design with hands-on operational expertise. Your time will be predominantly focused on operations, with opportunities to contribute to architecture and strategy. You will design, implement, and automate advanced networking technologies, with an emphasis on Cisco ACI and SD Access. At the same time, you will ensure seamless operational support for our hybrid networking environment, encompassing traditional on-premise infrastructure, software-defined networking, and public cloud solutions.

• Operational Expertise: Provide hands-on operational support and expert advice on IT infrastructure automation across the organization, including cloud and on-premise environments. 

• Technology Optimisation: Implement solutions that reduce manual effort for routine IT infrastructure tasks, minimising errors by leveraging automation platforms and capabilities. 

• Business Agility: Enable business areas to access common infrastructure services more efficiently by delivering automation through standardised, repeatable interfaces. 

• Resilience: Ensure that all activities align with the Bank’s high security standards, incorporating resilience practices to sustain operations during times of adversity. 

• Technology Strategy: Contribute to the selection of technologies that meet the Bank’s business needs, with a focus on hybrid cloud strategies, automation, monitoring, and resilience. 

• IT Operations: Maintain high-quality networking services for diverse customers across on-premise and cloud facilities, using Configuration-as-Code practices to reduce risks in configuration changes. 

• A university degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience. 

• Significant experience in both the design and operational support of network systems, including Software Defined Networking (ACI and SD Access). 

• Deep knowledge of Cisco IOS, IOS-XE, and NXOS. 

• Familiarity with other platforms such as Palo Alto, Infoblox, and F5 is advantageous. 

• Expertise in automation tools and frameworks, with a proven ability to improve operational efficiency. 

• Experience in DevOps practices, particularly automation and reusability for both project delivery and operations. 

• Proficiency in scripting languages and automation frameworks (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Ansible, Terraform). 

• Experience with public cloud infrastructure, preferably Microsoft Azure. 

• Strong troubleshooting skills for complex network issues, with a strategic focus on long-term solutions. 

• Demonstrated ability to lead initiatives or projects, with a focus on outcomes rather than team management. 

• Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation to support network issues outside core hours. 

• Excellent command of English and effective communication skills.
