EDC Senior Regional Manager (Export Development Canada)

Term Details: This position is a Locally Engaged Staff position, subject to the Terms and Conditions of Employment for LES in Seoul, South Korea. This process will be used to create a list of eligible candidates for similar positions either indeterminate, term or emergency.

Summary of Duties:

The Embassy of Canada to the Republic of Korea is seeking to hire a Senior Regional Manager at the LE-M1 level within the Export Development Canada Section.


Export Development Canada (EDC) is Canada’s export credit agency, offering knowledge and innovative financial and commercial solutions to help Canadian exporters and investors expand their international business. EDC’s knowledge and partnerships are used by more than 10,000 Canadian companies and their global customers in up to 200 markets worldwide each year. Approximately 80 per cent of EDC’s customers are small and medium-sized businesses.


EDC is a Crown corporation, wholly owned by the Government of Canada, is financially self-sustaining, and is a recognized leader in financial reporting and economic analysis. While headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, EDC has a worldwide presence.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


Under the leadership and guidance of the Chief Representative, South Korea, the Senior Regional Manager is responsible for leading/co-leading EDC’s business development efforts in South Korea, including strategic relationship management and implementation of EDC’s business strategy and country plan.


Provides insights to Senior EDC Management into the needs of the South Korean market in terms of innovative solutions to meet country specific and regional business needs.


Provides advice and recommendations on investments and business opportunities for Canadian companies in South Korea and ensures team members’ approach is aligned with EDC strategy and philosophies.


Provides oversight and leadership of the development and implementation of sales and client engagement initiatives in South Korea.


Additionally, as the EDC South Korea office evolves over time, this position may be required to provide guidance, performance management and leadership to direct reports.


Pro-actively manage accounts of key buyers, borrowers and market intermediaries, and contribute to the systematic management of EDC’s Canadian accounts active or interested in the South Korean market.


The Senior Regional Manager is also responsible for building and managing the brand image and reputation of EDC in the market and for managing the Corporation’s relationship with the Canadian Government, in respect to South Korea.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

*Language will be assessed further during the process. 

Education:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree from accredited college or university in field related to the position, including but not limited to international business, business administration, finance or economics.

 

Language:

  • Full Professional Proficiency in English and Korean, both written and spoken (is understood as the ability to speak and write the language with clients and stakeholders with a rich and appropriate vocabulary, a clear and fluent rhythm with little or no hesitations, little or no mistakes with regards to spelling, vocabulary, grammar or syntax, and with minimal accent)

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in a strategic relationship management and business development role with Korean Chaebol, Multi-national Corporation in South Korea,  Domestic or foreign bank, and other capital provider or financial intermediaries
  • Most recent experience in the past minimum 7  years has to be in Korea
  • A proven track record of developing and managing strategic relationships with top tier Korean corporates, conglomerates, and state-owned enterprises across a spectrum of industry sectors including call planning, prospecting and selling to originate transactions;
  • Relevant professional experience in using influencing, negotiating, relationship management skills, presentation skills,
  • Experience in corporate, commercial or investment banking underwriting in corporate lending or in structured project finance

 

RATED REQUIREMENTS
The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview online, pre-recorded or in-person, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.
 
Knowledge:
  • Sound knowledge about Korean conglomerates and their financing needs
  • In-depth knowledge of domestic lending environment, challenges for foreign lenders in South Korea and ways to overcome these challenges
 
Competencies:
  • Self-starter and results oriented
  • Team work 
  • Client focus 
 
Abilities: 
  • Ability to identify key financial ratios relevant in corporate lending/structured project finance transactions as well as non-credit risks relevant to financial institutions such as EDC
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English and Korean, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently in a proactive and accountable manner
  • Ability to develop and maintain a network of clients, local contacts and influencers
 
 
Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.
 
  • Sector experience in Hydrogen, EV, Wind, cleantech, agri-food, advanced manufacturing
  • MBA or Master’s Degree in related fields including but not limited to Finance, business administration, international relations, project finance, or finance 
 
 
Operational Requirements:
  • Hours of work: Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with Locally-Engaged Staff regulations of 37.5 hours per week.
  • Location of work: Work is normally performed on-site with flexibility for teleworking.
  • Travel Requirements: Able to travel locally and internationally as required.
  • Work outside regular business hours when required and work in virtual teams
 
Conditions of Employment:

Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.

- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.

- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.

- Other conditions of employment:

  • The hiring or appointment of the successful candidate will be subject to obtaining Reliability Status (RS). Please note that RS must be maintained throughout your employment at the Embassy, as failure to do so may result in dismissal
    Ability to maintain a valid working authorization in South Korea for the duration of the employment term is a condition
    Health assessment may be requested at the discretion of the Head of Mission.
