Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy Seoul is delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and driven trade professional in the Department for Business & Trade team. The Export Support Service (ESS) programme is the UK’s prestigious trade service delivering high quality practical support to UK small and medium-sized businesses to export overseas.  

This position will suit a dynamic, proactive, and creative individual. You will play a leading role deepening and broadening the UK’s trade relationship with Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. Working with the ESS Senior Market Advisor for Korea, you will provide tailored and expert advice for British SMEs. Working quickly, you will understand their requirements, undertake desk research to gather market information. You will develop and leverage a wide network of partners, organisations and local companies to make relevant introductions.

  1. Trade Enquiries
    You will cover an exciting and broad list of sectors and types of enquiries. You will need to be adaptable, providing credible advice to a range of diverse companies. You will not be expected to be an expert in every sector, but will naturally acquire knowledge and networks over time, particularly in F&B, consumer goods, and retails sectors. 
  2. Market Collateral
    You will manage Korea's library of market information and collateral. The library comprises of factsheets, sector reports, and treaties that guide UK businesses looking to export to the market. Your role is to ensure the integrity of this important source of information and liaise with the ESS Hub to ensure the smooth delivery of one-off enquiry service relating to materials found in this library. You will support Taiwan and Japan on their information libraries as required.
  3. ORN service providers
    You will, with support from the ESS Hub, manage the local Overseas Referral Network (ORN). The ORN is composed of service providers for advice and expertise, including legal firms, accountants, and consulting firms. Your role is to source new service providers, meet with them to assess capabilities, and monitor our client's satisfaction. 

Roles and responsibilities/what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

Roles and responsibilities may evolve and the jobholder will need to be flexible and agile.  
Below is an indication of the likely core aspects of the role:

     1. Client Account Management and Market Enquiry: (60%)

  • Increase the value of UK exports by being a point of contact for SMEs looking to export to the market, providing advice on gaining entry to Korea. This requires market knowledge and strong understanding of the Korea market.
  • Working with the ESS Senior Market Advisor, identify UK businesses’ routes to market, assess market entry needs, and advise on options for success. You will be lead officer for some enquiries with ESS officer providing support if needed.
  • Ensure export account management is followed and businesses are linked into the International Trade Advisors (ITA) Network in the UK.
  • Join UK facing market information and promotional events as opportunities arise with London HQ, UK regions, and Devolved Administrations.

     2. Overseas Referral Network and External Partners: (10%)

  • Recommend suitable partners from the local Overseas Referral Network in Korea to UK companies after ESS service provision, ensuring regular follow up to track service delivery and client satisfaction.
  • Be point of contact for Export to Japan (E2J) service delivery partners, tracking enquiries delivery and monitoring E2J performance against ESS KPIs.

     3. Market Collaterals library: (10%)

  • Research and keep up to date a range of high quality market information products. These include overviews of key sectors of interest and export guides for Korea. You will also support Taiwan and Japan material development as required.

     4. Northeast Asia Regional working: (20%)

  • Develop methods for enquiry cross referral and opportunity sharing across all three North East Asia markets.
  • Support Taiwan and Japan in enquiry management and first response when Market Advisors are unavailable. This will not require Taiwan and Japan market expertise, but will support the office in managing customer enquiries, pipeline, and post-service feedback. This may involve travel to Taiwan and Japan at times.
  • Occasionally support other markets in APAC region to provide the team with regional resilience.

Essential on arrival:

  • At least 5 years’ experience in trade promotion or a market entry consulting job.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, comfortable dealing with senior officials and business people.
  • Strong identification of client’s requirements and proactive problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Working with regional and virtual teams
  • Strong skills in Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint
  • English and Korean language fluency required.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with UK business and/or UK culture.
  • Experience with working on projects in Northeast Asia.
  • Chinese and/or Japanese language skills.

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):

The British Embassy in Seoul offers a full range of L&D opportunities, including learning sets, e-learning and face-to-face classes.  Online courses and on the job learning will form the core of the jobholder’s induction into embassy work, and these may be enhanced by an additional induction course in the UK. Every member of staff is entitled to 5 L&D days per year.

Working Patterns:

Normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:15 (17:00 on Fridays). While some evening work and travel overseas (which might include weekends) and within Korea is required, we promote family-friendly flexible working opportunities, where operational and security needs allow.
