The Political Assistant is a subject-matter expert assigned to U.S. Embassy Seoul’s Political Section to assist U.S. diplomats in understanding domestic political developments, building contacts in the political sphere, and arranging meetings with National Assembly members, their staffs, and other informants. The Political Assistant belongs to the Political Section’s Internal Unit, which covers the National Assembly, political parties, the presidential office, elections, etc. Besides facilitating the work of U.S. diplomats, the Political Assistant is expected to engage independently in networking and reporting on political developments. This position also backs up the Internal Unit’s other Political Assistant, who covers civil-society issues such as human rights, women’s empowerment, trafficking in persons, and labor.  Perform other duties as needed.

EXPERIENCE:  The position requires at least three years of experience in research, university teaching or news reporting on the subject of politics, international affairs, or public policy. Three years of experience working as a staffer for a political party, election campaign, or National Assembly member would also satisfy this requirement. 

Education Requirements:  A bachelor’s degree in politics, international relations, law, public administration, or economy is required.

Language Requirements: Level IV (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing English and Korean is required.  Shortlisted applicants will be invited to take an English language test unless official English language test scores (TOEIC scores of at least 945/ TOEFL scores of at least 95) are submitted with application.
