Purpose of the role:
As an integral part of the Risk Management team, the role of the Senior Developer - Analyst is to contribute to the Bank’s IT strategy by specifying and building-out software to support the financial risk domain. This includes engineering new and existing solutions to achieve the banks future state architecture utilising microservices and containerisation. The role is to strengthen financial risk management by analysing and designing efficient and robust business processes based on controlled automation. The successful candidate will coordinate the selection, implementation and maintenance of IT solutions and take main responsibility for the reliability of Risk Management’s IT systems.
By joining the Risk IT team in Risk Management:
- You will engineer the technology infrastructure that underlies the management of financial risk at the BIS. We are a close-knit team designing innovative technical solutions to the challenging risk management problems that arise from providing financial services to our central bank customers.
- We work with a fresh and constantly evolving technology estate, maintaining an in-house developed software platform written in C# .NET Core, utilising GPU based compute and using Nvidia CUDA libraries. We’re currently moving the platform to a microservice based architecture on Redhat OpenShift containers, utilising Kafka stream processing.
- We’re not just part of IT, but are embedded in the BIS Financial Risk Management function. You will collaborate with passionate colleagues who analyse, manage and quantitatively measure and model financial risk; not just in the design and build phase, but in delivery where your work makes a real impact.

Primary accountabilities:
Maintain and develop Risk Management’s IT systems within the Bank’s overall IT strategy
As a full stack DevOps engineer you will specify, develop, implement, document and test Risk IT applications, interfaces, services, and processes to measure, manage, and control risk across risk types and to value of Bank’s balance sheet. You will work in close collaboration with other units across the Bank. You will help shape and achieve the Bank’s IT architecture strategy by contributing to the specification and development of the new foundational IT infrastructure, and by integrating new products utilising containerised micro-service IT architecture. Risk IT provide 24/7 production support for business-critical applications in Risk Management supporting the banking services. Feedback through support feeds requirements that ensure continual improvement, and ultimately stability and reliability of Risk IT systems.
Support risk strategy and policy
As a valued member of Risk IT, you will support end users in Risk Management in the development and maintenance of business tools and small applications. You will lead projects in line with the Bank’s agile project management methodology. Your expert advice will be sought by Management of Risk Management on application architecture/design and strategic technology issues.
Collaboration and business support
You will work with business teams across Risk Management to ensure that business applications effectively and efficiently support the management of risk and the valuation of the Bank’s balance sheet. You will collaborate closely with other BIS units on IT-related matters. You will develop and maintain a professional network with peers of IT areas at central banks and international financial institutions, service providers and other institutions.
Qualifications, skills, and experience:
- Excellent knowledge of C# / .NET (ideally) or another object-oriented language such as Java or C++.
- Strong working knowledge of common algorithms, data structures and design patterns.
- Excellent knowledge working with relational databases such as SQL Server, Oracle or Sybase.
- Previous experience in financial services, bankinig or a related industry.
- Experience working with fixed income products and derivatives would be highly advantageous.
- Very good experience in designing, specifying, and implementing reliable IT solutions working closely with business users/stakeholders.
- Experience building and consuming APIs and messaging based architecture.
- Experience with Python, and building micro-service architectures with containerisation (eg, Docker, OpenShift, Kubernetes etc.) is an advantage.
- Open minded; enjoying the exposure to different areas within the organisation. Interested to continually improvement through learning and adapting to changing requirements.
- Demonstrable ability to strongly contribute to a highly collaborative team-oriented environment following agile development methodologies.
- Solid English writing skills, including the ability to write clear business specifications as well as technical system documentation.
