Organizational Setting
The Forestry Division (NFO) leads FAO's work in promoting sustainable forest management and providing leadership on the environmental, social and economic dimensions of forestry, including its contributions to poverty reduction and food security and nutrition. It liaises with member countries, civil society and the private sector in aspects ranging from development of effective forest policies to forest conservation and management issues, and strengthens the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Division also collects analyses and disseminates information on the world's forest resources and on the production, trade and consumption of wood and non-wood forest products.
The Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) team supports countries in achieving high quality emission reductions from deforestation and forest degradation, enhancing and'conserving tropical forests and other high-carbon ecosystems while contributing to national sustainable development and agrifood systems transformation.
The post is located in the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) team within NFO at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
Reporting Lines
The Forestry Officer (REDD+) reports to the Senior Forestry Officer/Team Leader of REDD+ team, under the overall guidance of the Deputy Director, NFO and works in close coordination with NFO teams and personnel dealing with supply chains, forests and climate change, and national forest monitoring. The incumbent will work closely with Decentralized Offices and other relevant FAO units.
Technical Focus
The Forestry Officer (REDD+) will support the Forestry Division's work related to REDD+ and climate change overall, with a specific focus on transformation of agrifood systems towards sustainable practices reducing impact on forests, decoupling agriculture supply chains from deforestation and promoting the enhancement of synergies between agriculture and forestry. This topic is multi-dimensional and cross-sectoral, the Forestry Officer (REDD+) will therefore need to engage with other FAO units, notably in the divisions in charge of plant production, livestock production, market and trade, agricultural economy and statistics. Additionally, the Forestry Officer (REDD+) will support technical exchanges with partner organizations within the context of the FAO Strategic Framework.'

Research, technical analysis and project related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.
Key Functions
• Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.
• Produces a variety of technical information, data, statistics and reports as well as input for technical documents and web pages.
• Provides technical support/analysis to various assessments, studies and initiatives and provides technical backstopping to field projects.
• Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes and databases.
• Participates on multidisciplinary teams, and/or leads working groups/teams collaborates with other centres/divisions/offices and agencies on work groups and committees and promotes best practices.
• Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within Members such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials, on-line tools.
• Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations.
• Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Corporate Strategy.
Specific Functions
• Contributes to the planning, monitoring and reporting on the implementation of FAO work on REDD+ covering linkages between agriculture and forestry, achieving specific progammes and projects objectives (UN-REDDC, GCF projects, etc.) and contributing to the Programme Priority Areas (PPAs) with special focus on 'better production', 'better environment' and 'a better life’.
• Supports awareness and contributes to generation and dissemination of knowledge on issues related to deforestation-related market regulations for agricultural commodities and products and other initiatives aiming to decouple agricultural production from deforestation.
• Works with relevant technical units, Decentralized Offices and partners to respond to countries' requests on enhancing synergies between agriculture and forestry to prevent forest loss/deforestation while contributing to food security, sustainable development and enhanced livelihoods.
• Supports alignment and synergies of REDD+ strategies and/or Nationally Determined Contributions (forests elements) with Food Systems national pathways, strengthening policy coherence to reduce trade-offs between agriculture, trade and forest sector, including by boosting/in partnership with Food System Summit coalitions related to reducing deforestation.
• Supports the identification and/or the development of innovative technical solutions and new tools to boost government and business action on decoupling agricultural production from deforestation towards emission reductions, agrifood systems transformation and enhanced livelihoods.
• Contributes to resource mobilization efforts (including climate/results-based finance) to develop further knowledge and to support countries advancing and implementing REDD+ strategies, addressing drivers and halting deforestation, transforming agrifood systems towards sustainable practices that reduce impact on forests, and promoting actions aimed at decoupling agriculture supply chains from deforestation.
• Guides outreach actions related to outcomes of the previous functions.
• Participates and contributes to FAO dialogues on agriculture and forestry linkages.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in agriculture, agronomy, forestry, natural resource management, economy with a focus on commodity production and/or trade, or a related field.
• Five years of relevant experience in forest or land management, or in sustainable agriculture in low and middle income countries.
• Working knowledge (proficient - level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate - level B) of another official FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions.

• Two years of relevant experience in technical assistance related to linkages between agriculture and forestry in low and middle income countries is considered a strong asset.
• Relevance and extent of experience in working multi-partners projects and multidisciplinary teams is desirable.
• Extent and relevance of experience in leading knowledge development projects, in the field of forest and natural resources management or sustainable agriculture.
• Ability to mobilize resources.
• Work experience in organizing high-level events, technical workshops and seminars.
