About me

I’m currently a Child Protection Specialist in UNICEF Sudan. I joined UNICEF as a UNV in Fiji, and again as a JPO in Sudan in 2015, funded both times by the Republic of Korea. I studied Classics at Brown University in the USA, and hold an MPhil in Ancient Greek History from Oxford University in the UK.

The JPO experience in Sudan

Sudan is a demanding mistress: it constantly pushes you to grow, professionally and personally. In Sudan, the issues are vast, the resources are scarce, and the endurance needed to make a difference, is immense. However, equally, it is one of the most rewarding and interesting places to work, illustrating the nexus between acute and protracted emergencies, and a constrained development context. And the JPO experience gives you the best vantage point to this work. As a JPO, you get to dive deep into the intricacies of working in Sudan, but also have the luxury of being in the learner’s seat, and receiving the support of colleagues who, for me, have been teachers, mentors and coaches on my learning journey. With their guidance and support, I was given the space to figure things out, try new things, and pick myself back up if things didn't pan out. It was a time for growth and learning, which I was able to do without regret thanks to the strong support network around me.

Sudan is also a place of great opportunity and personal growth. After two years as a JPO, I had the chance to re-join the team as a P3 Child Protection Specialist to support an ever-growing portfolio on children on the move, reflecting the critical space Sudan occupies as the crossroads of the mixed migration dynamics in the Horn of Africa. And now, after almost four years in Sudan – two years as a JPO and another two as a P3 Child Protection Specialist – I’ve been given a chance to build on my experiences from Sudan as a P4 Child Protection Specialist in Ethiopia.
